One thing I find interesting is that reviews seem to accept that Lizzie’s problem is that she’s ‘plain’. I think the point is that she’s perceptive, smart and speaks her mind, which frighten possible suitors and so she thinks of herself as plain.
I like that take. Coming from inside of Lizzie’s skin – I think you hit the nail on the head. She’s different from women at that time and it confuses everyone. They don’t know what to do with her. She doesn’t know what to do with herself. Starbuck gets her to see her inner & outer beauty, but he doesn’t change her into something she’s not – which is good.
